SharePoint Support: Microsoft Options & Third Party

Support for SharePoint splits along one line: SharePoint Online is covered by the Microsoft 365 subscription, while on-premises farms rely on SharePoint Server support whose availability from Microsoft depends entirely on which version is installed. This page maps the paths: what Microsoft covers for Online, where Server stands after the July 2026 end-of-support date, what Microsoft support excludes, and where third-party providers fit.

SharePoint Online: support is part of the Microsoft 365 subscription

There is no separate SharePoint Online support contract. Technical support is included with every paid Microsoft 365 subscription and is reached through the admin center. The process is documented in Get support for Microsoft 365 for business:

  • Admin center tickets. An admin opens Help & support in the Microsoft 365 admin center, describes the issue, and if the suggested articles do not resolve it, requests a callback or email response. Only users with an admin role can open tickets; end users route through their own IT or the admin.
  • Partner-purchased subscriptions. If every subscription in the tenant was bought through a partner, support goes through that partner rather than Microsoft directly.
  • Unified and Premier. Enterprises holding a Unified or Premier support contract get contract-based response targets and escalation paths on top of the included support; the admin center surfaces those options when the contract is linked to the tenant. Details are published under Microsoft Unified support documentation.

SharePoint Server: support depends on the version

Microsoft's products ending support in 2026 list puts both SharePoint Server 2016 and SharePoint Server 2019 at end of support on July 14, 2026. That date has passed. Both versions now receive no security updates, no non-security fixes, and no paid or free assisted support from Microsoft. There is no Extended Security Update program for SharePoint Server, so there is no Microsoft fix path for 2016 or 2019 short of upgrading.

SharePoint Server Subscription Edition (SE) is the only supported on-premises version. It follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy, and Microsoft's server lifecycle statement commits to supporting it until at least December 31, 2035. Staying supported requires an active license path — Software Assurance on a volume license or a subscription license — and staying within the minimum supported build, since SE receives continuous updates tracked in the SharePoint update history.

Running 2016 or 2019 today means running out of support. A farm on either version has no Microsoft channel for a security patch or a break/fix ticket. The options are an upgrade to Subscription Edition, a migration to SharePoint Online, or independent support while one of those is planned.

What Microsoft support covers — and what it excludes

Included Microsoft 365 support addresses the service: outages, service degradation, licensing and billing problems, and configuration questions about features working as designed. It does not extend to work Microsoft classifies as advisory or custom. Per the support scope in Microsoft's documentation — for example, the SSO support options article, which states implementation work is not included with the subscription — the excluded categories in practice are:

  • Custom development: SPFx web parts, custom workflows, third-party integrations, and debugging code Microsoft did not write.
  • Migrations: moving content from file shares, older SharePoint versions, or other platforms into SharePoint Online or SE. Microsoft supplies tooling (SharePoint Migration Tool, Migration Manager) but not the project labor.
  • Information architecture and intranet design: site structures, hub topologies, navigation, branding.
  • Permission model design and cleanup beyond confirming that permissions behave as documented.

For questions rather than tickets, the free community channels are the SharePoint space on Microsoft Tech Community and Microsoft Q&A on learn.microsoft.com — useful for how-to answers, with no SLA.

Third-party SharePoint consulting: the work Microsoft does not do

Independent providers exist precisely in the excluded categories above, plus support for versions Microsoft no longer touches.

How Medha Cloud fits

Medha Cloud provides SharePoint support for on-premises farms and SharePoint Online: break/fix on SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019 farms past end of support, upgrades from 2016/2019 to Subscription Edition, migrations to SharePoint Online, hybrid configuration, and permission cleanups. A free consultation is available, and live chat is available for farms that are down or degraded. Engineers operate from India and the United States, covering both time zones.

FAQ

Is SharePoint support included with Microsoft 365?

Yes. Technical support for SharePoint Online is included with any paid Microsoft 365 subscription and is opened through the admin center by an admin. There is no separate support fee for service issues.

Can I still get Microsoft support for SharePoint Server 2019?

No. SharePoint Server 2019 reached end of support on July 14, 2026, alongside SharePoint Server 2016. No security updates or assisted support are available for either version. Subscription Edition is the supported on-premises path.

Does Microsoft support cover SharePoint migrations or custom development?

No. Included support covers the service itself. Migrations, custom development, intranet builds, and permission redesign are outside its scope and are handled by partners or independent providers.

What is SharePoint Server Subscription Edition supported until?

Microsoft's Modern Lifecycle statement commits to supporting Subscription Edition until at least December 31, 2035, provided the farm stays on a supported build with an active license path.

Out-of-support SharePoint farm? Free consultation and live chat are available for SharePoint Server 2016/2019 farms — break/fix now, and an upgrade path to Subscription Edition or SharePoint Online when ready.
