Exchange Server Versions: Build Numbers & Support Dates

This is a reference list of every Exchange Server version — the same table our Exchange support team works from when assessing an environment. It covers Exchange 2010 through Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE), with release dates, latest build numbers, and end-of-support status. Build numbers are taken from Microsoft's Exchange Server build numbers and release dates page, current as of the July 2026 security updates.

Exchange Server versions list: releases, builds, and support dates

The table lists each major release with its RTM date, official end-of-support date, and the most recent build available. The build number identifies the installed CU and security update level; the first two segments identify the major version (15.2 is both 2019 and SE, 15.1 is 2016, 15.0 is 2013, 14.x is 2010).

Only Exchange Server SE is in support. Exchange 2016 and 2019 both reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Security updates for those versions now require enrollment in Microsoft's paid Extended Security Update (ESU) program. Exchange 2013 and 2010 receive no updates under any program.

Exchange Server SE: the current version

Exchange Server Subscription Edition released on July 1, 2025 as RTM build 15.2.2562.17. It replaces the versioned release model: there is no end-of-support date because SE follows the Modern Lifecycle Policy, under which support continues as long as you stay current on cumulative updates and maintain active subscription licensing. SE RTM is code-equivalent to Exchange 2019 CU15 with licensing and branding changes, which is why its build number continues the 15.2 series.

Since RTM, Microsoft has shipped security updates and hotfix updates on the RTM baseline. The current build is 15.2.2562.45 (RTM Jul26SU, released July 14, 2026). Notable interim builds: 15.2.2562.27 (Sep25HU), 15.2.2562.35 (Dec25SU), 15.2.2562.37 (Feb26SU), 15.2.2562.43 (Jun26SU). SE CU1, the first full cumulative update, removes coexistence with 2016 and 2019 once installed. Licensing, upgrade mechanics, and the CU cadence are covered in our Exchange Server SE guide.

Exchange Server 2019 builds

Exchange 2019 shipped October 22, 2018 (RTM build 15.2.221.12) and moved to a twice-yearly CU cadence in 2022. The final cumulative update is CU15 (2025H1), released February 10, 2025 as build 15.2.1748.10. CU14 (February 13, 2024, build 15.2.1544.4) remains a serviced baseline for ESU customers. The latest builds are 15.2.1748.48 (CU15 Jul26SU) and 15.2.1544.43 (CU14 Jul26SU). Only CU14 and CU15 receive ESU-program security updates; older CUs stopped at their last published SU.

Exchange Server 2016 builds

Exchange 2016 shipped October 1, 2015 (RTM build 15.1.225.42). Its final cumulative update is CU23 (2022H1), released April 20, 2022 as build 15.1.2507.6 — no further CUs were produced after that. All subsequent servicing has been security updates on the CU23 baseline; the latest is 15.1.2507.71 (CU23 Jul26SU, July 14, 2026). A 2016 server must be on CU23 to install current ESU security updates.

Exchange Server 2013 and 2010 builds

Exchange 2013 (RTM December 3, 2012, build 15.0.516.32) ended support on April 11, 2023. Its final serviced state is CU23 with the March 2023 security update, build 15.0.1497.48. Exchange 2010 (RTM November 9, 2009, build 14.0.639.21) ended support on October 13, 2020; the last released build is SP3 Update Rollup 32, 14.3.513.0, published March 2, 2021 to address the ProxyLogon vulnerabilities. Neither version is eligible for the ESU program.

How to check your Exchange version and build

The Exchange admin center (Servers page) shows the version, but only at CU granularity. For the exact build, run this in the Exchange Management Shell:

Get-ExchangeServer | Format-List Name,Edition,AdminDisplayVersion

This reports the CU build (for example, Version 15.2 Build 1748.10 for 2019 CU15) but does not reflect installed security updates. To see the full build including SUs, check the file version of the setup binary:

Get-Command Exsetup.exe | ForEach-Object {$_.FileVersionInfo}

Microsoft's recommended method is the Exchange HealthChecker script, which reports the build number, detected security hotfixes, and configuration issues in one pass. Map the result against the tables above to identify the CU and SU level. How CUs and SUs relate, and how to install them, is covered in our Exchange cumulative update guide.

Coexistence and hybrid support matrix

Version coexistence rules determine which versions can run in the same Active Directory organization during a migration:

Version pairCoexistence supported
Exchange SE + 2019 (CU14/CU15)Yes — in-place upgrade or side-by-side
Exchange SE + 2016 (CU23)Yes — until SE CU1 is deployed
Exchange SE + 2013 or olderNo
Exchange 2019 + 2016Yes
Exchange 2019 + 2013Yes (both now out of support)
Exchange 2016 + 2010Yes (both now out of support)
Exchange 2019 + 2010No

The pattern: each version coexists with the two preceding versions, except SE, which coexists only with 2016 CU23 and 2019 CU14/CU15. For hybrid with Exchange Online, Microsoft requires the hybrid servers to run a supported version — SE, or 2016/2019 under ESU as a transitional state. Full requirements are in the Exchange Server supportability matrix.

Is there an Exchange Server 2022?

No. Exchange Server 2022 was announced in 2021 but never released; Microsoft cancelled it and announced in 2024 that the next version would be Exchange Server Subscription Edition instead. There is also no Exchange Server 2025 as a product name — SE is the successor to Exchange 2019, and it drops year-based naming entirely. Any build documentation referencing versions after 15.2.1748.x (2019 CU15) belongs to the SE 15.2.2562.x series.

Upgrade paths per version

Current versionPath to Exchange SE
Exchange 2019 CU14/CU15In-place upgrade to SE (installs like a CU), or side-by-side
Exchange 2016 CU23Side-by-side: install SE servers, move mailboxes, decommission 2016. No in-place path.
Exchange 2013Two hops: migrate to 2019, then upgrade to SE — or migrate to Exchange Online directly
Exchange 2010No supported on-premises path to SE in one organization; migrate to Exchange Online, or rebuild via an intermediate 2016 organization

The in-place path from 2019 is the reason Microsoft advised getting to 2019 CU14/CU15 before October 2025: SE installs over it like a cumulative update, with no mailbox moves and no new hardware. From 2016 the mailbox-move project is unavoidable, so many organizations use it as the decision point between SE on-premises and Exchange Online.

FAQ

What is the latest version of Exchange Server?

Exchange Server Subscription Edition (SE), released July 1, 2025. The current build is 15.2.2562.45 (RTM Jul26SU, July 14, 2026). It has no end-of-support date under the Modern Lifecycle Policy.

Which Exchange Server versions are still supported?

Only Exchange Server SE. Exchange 2016 and 2019 reached end of support on October 14, 2025 and now receive security updates only through the paid ESU program. Exchange 2013 and 2010 receive nothing.

What is the latest build for Exchange 2019?

15.2.1748.48 — Exchange 2019 CU15 with the July 2026 security update (July 14, 2026), available to ESU-enrolled organizations. On CU14 the equivalent build is 15.2.1544.43.

Does Exchange Server 2022 exist?

No. It was announced and then cancelled. The next release after Exchange 2019 was Exchange Server Subscription Edition in July 2025.
