How to Screen Record on Windows & Mac — Free, No Software Needed (2026)

You don't need to download OBS, Camtasia, or any third-party software to record your screen. Both Windows and Mac come with free, built-in screen recorders that are good enough for most use cases — tutorials, presentations, bug reports, and video calls.
I use screen recording daily at Medha Cloud for creating client documentation, recording troubleshooting steps, and making training videos for our team. Here's every free method available in 2026.

Windows 11 Screen Record with Snipping Tool
Since late 2022, Snipping Tool on Windows 11 includes a built-in screen recorder. It's the simplest way to record your screen on Windows — no installs, no configuration.
How to Record
- Open Snipping Tool (press Win + S, type "Snipping Tool")
- Click the video camera icon at the top (next to the camera icon)
- Click + New
- Drag to select the area you want to record
- Click Start in the toolbar
- A 3-second countdown begins, then recording starts
- Click the stop button (red square) when you're done
- The recording opens in Snipping Tool — click Save (Ctrl+S)
Windows 10 & 11 Screen Record with Xbox Game Bar
Xbox Game Bar is pre-installed on every Windows 10 and 11 PC. Despite the "Xbox" name, it works for recording any app — not just games.
Quick Record (Keyboard Shortcut)
The fastest way — no need to open Game Bar at all:
Recording starts immediately for the active window. Press the same shortcut again to stop. A small timer appears in the top-right corner.
Full Game Bar Method
- Press Win + G to open Xbox Game Bar
- Find the Capture widget (if not visible, click the camera icon in the top bar)
- Click the record button (circle icon) to start
- Toggle microphone on/off with the mic icon
- Click stop when done
Other Game Bar shortcuts:
| Shortcut | What It Does |
|---|---|
| Win + Alt + R | Start/stop recording |
| Win + Alt + M | Toggle microphone during recording |
| Win + Alt + PrtScn | Take a screenshot via Game Bar |
| Win + G | Open/close Game Bar overlay |
Windows Record with PowerPoint (Hidden Feature)
Most people don't know this — Microsoft PowerPoint has a built-in screen recorder. If you have Office installed, you already have this.
- Open PowerPoint (any blank presentation)
- Go to the Insert tab
- Click Screen Recording (far right of the ribbon)
- Click Select Area and drag to choose the recording region
- Click Record (or press Win + Shift + R)
- When done, move your mouse to the top of the screen — the control bar appears. Click Stop
- The video is inserted into your slide. Right-click it → Save Media As to export as MP4
Mac Screen Record with Cmd+Shift+5
The easiest way to record your screen on Mac. Same toolbar that handles screenshots, but with video options too.
How to Record
A toolbar appears at the bottom of the screen with these options:
- Record Entire Screen — captures everything
- Record Selected Portion — drag to select an area
- Press ⌘ Cmd + Shift + 5
- Click either "Record Entire Screen" or "Record Selected Portion"
- Click Options to enable microphone, set timer, or choose save location
- Click Record
- To stop: click the stop button in the menu bar (top-right), or press ⌘ Cmd + Ctrl + Esc
Mac Screen Record with QuickTime Player
QuickTime has been able to record screens since macOS Mojave. It's essentially the same as Cmd+Shift+5, but useful if you prefer a traditional app interface.
- Open QuickTime Player (from Applications or Spotlight)
- Click File → New Screen Recording
- The same recording toolbar appears (identical to Cmd+Shift+5)
- Choose full screen or selected area
- Click Record
- Stop via the menu bar icon or Cmd+Ctrl+Esc
QuickTime saves recordings in MOV format. To convert to MP4, you can use File → Export As → 1080p/720p/480p.

Pro Tips for Better Screen Recordings
- Close unnecessary apps and tabs. Notifications popping up during a recording look unprofessional. Turn on Do Not Disturb (Windows: Focus Assist, Mac: Focus) before recording.
- Use a decent microphone. Built-in laptop mics pick up fan noise and keyboard sounds. Even a $20 USB mic makes a huge difference. If you're recording client-facing tutorials, invest in audio quality.
- Increase your cursor size. Viewers often can't see the mouse cursor in recordings. On Windows: Settings → Accessibility → Mouse pointer → make it larger. On Mac: System Settings → Accessibility → Display → Pointer size.
- Record at 1080p. If your screen is 4K, the recording file will be massive and most viewers watch at 1080p anyway. Resize your browser/window to 1920x1080 before recording.
- Use keyboard shortcuts. Pressing Win+Alt+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+5 (Mac) to start/stop recording is cleaner than fumbling with mouse clicks on the toolbar — which show up in the recording.
- Plan your flow. Before hitting record, open all the tabs and windows you need. Nothing wastes viewer time like watching someone search for a file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screen record with audio on Windows for free?
Yes. Both Snipping Tool (Windows 11) and Xbox Game Bar (Windows 10/11) record system audio and microphone audio for free. No downloads needed. Toggle the mic and speaker icons in the recording toolbar.
How do I record my screen on Windows 10 without downloading anything?
Press Win + Alt + R to start recording with Xbox Game Bar. It's pre-installed on Windows 10. Press the same shortcut to stop. The recording is saved to Videos\Captures folder.
Why can't I record my desktop with Xbox Game Bar?
Xbox Game Bar only records app windows — not the desktop, File Explorer, or the taskbar. This is a known limitation. For full desktop recording on Windows 11, use Snipping Tool's video mode. On Windows 10, use PowerPoint's Screen Recording feature or OBS Studio (free).
How do I record system audio on Mac?
Mac's built-in screen recorder (Cmd+Shift+5) only records microphone audio, not system audio. To record what you hear from your speakers, you need a virtual audio driver like BlackHole (free, open-source) or Loopback (paid). Install it, set it as the audio source in your recording options.
What's the maximum recording length?
Xbox Game Bar defaults to a 2-hour limit (changeable in Settings → Gaming → Captures → Max recording length, up to 4 hours). Snipping Tool and Mac's recorder have no time limit — they record until you stop or run out of disk space.
How do I record a specific window instead of the full screen?
On Windows, Xbox Game Bar automatically records the active (focused) window. On Mac, Cmd+Shift+5 lets you choose "Record Selected Portion" — drag to fit exactly around the window. Snipping Tool also lets you select any area.
How much disk space does a screen recording use?
A typical 1080p screen recording uses about 100-200 MB per minute at default quality. A 10-minute recording is roughly 1-2 GB. If you're recording a lot, check your disk space regularly. Game Bar recordings are stored in C:\Users\YourName\Videos\Captures.
